Scratched into the tower wall at St Mary’s is a medieval hand recording the Black Death of 1349, alongside an inscribed drawing of Old St Paul’s Cathedral. The church was finished around 1381, its tall tower topped by an octagonal lantern and a slender lead spire. It’s open to look round, in the village of Ashwell; Ashwell & Morden station is about 3km east.
