Moor Park’s mansion began as a 1670s house for the Earl of Bedford, then gained its grand portico and colonnaded wings when architect Sir James Thornhill remodelled it for a South Sea Company financier in the 1720s. A ceiling by Antonio Verrio survives from the earlier build, and the 1st Airborne Corps planned the Battle of Arnhem here in 1944, in what’s still called the Arnhem Room. It’s now Moor Park Golf Club’s clubhouse, open to the public only for occasional guided tours. The London LOOP passes close by.
