John Milton came out to Chalfont St Giles to escape the plague in 1665 and finished Paradise Lost here; his cottage still stands and opens as a small museum. The village gathers round a green and pond in the Chilterns, and the Chiltern Open Air Museum of rescued historic buildings is close by. Seer Green station is about 3km south-west.
