Amersham has two halves: the old market town strung along a broad high street in the Misbourne valley, and hilltop “new” Amersham up by the station. The brick market hall in the middle of the old street was given to the town by Sir William Drake in 1682, and the frontages either side keep their coaching inns and timbered houses. Chiltern and Metropolitan-line trains stop a short walk up the hill.
