In 1938 workmen repairing the roof of Holy Trinity Church in Penn threw old whitewashed boards into the churchyard to go to the tip. One of the workmen spotted a painted face on a piece he’d taken home for firewood, and the boards turned out to be a 15th-century Doom, a painting of the Last Judgement, one of only five medieval examples on wood to survive. The Doom hangs above the chancel arch again. The church also has brasses of the Penns of Penn, a local family, and five grandchildren of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, lie in a vault under the nave. The village sits high on a spur of the Chilterns, about two miles north-west of Beaconsfield.
