Berkhamsted is a Chiltern market town in the Bulbourne valley, strung along the Grand Union Canal below the ruined motte-and-bailey of Berkhamsted Castle, where the English submitted to William the Conqueror in 1066. The novelist Graham Greene was born in the town in 1904. The station is right in the centre, and The Lamb is a long-standing town pub.
