Hylands is a white neo-classical mansion in parkland south-west of Chelmsford, grown from a modest Queen Anne house of the 1730s. Humphry Repton produced one of his Red Books for the estate in the early 19th century, and the grounds still carry that romantic landscaping — a serpentine lake, pleasure gardens and formal beds. Chelmsford City Council restored the house, and the park has been open to the public since 1966. Free to walk the grounds; the house opens for events and tours. Chelmsford station is about 3.5km north-east.
