Pleshey sits inside the earthworks of a vanished Norman castle — a huge grassy motte and a deep encircling moat, banks and ditches that still ring the village street. A fifteenth-century brick bridge, among the oldest surviving in the country, crosses the moat to the mound. There’s little here but the site itself, which is quietly remarkable.
