The oldest wooden church in the world stands in fields outside Chipping Ongar. Its Saxon nave is built from split oak logs set upright as a palisade wall — timbers dated to the mid-11th century, around the time of the Norman Conquest. Small and much-restored, it is still in use and open to visitors. Shenfield station is about 11km to the south-east.
