Arguably the best-preserved Norman keep in England stands above Castle Hedingham, built around 1140 by Aubrey de Vere and rising more than 30m through four floors, with one of the largest Norman arches in the country spanning its banqueting hall. Below it clusters a village of painted timber houses and old coaching inns. The keep and its grounds open to visitors.
