Augustinian friars settled at Clare in 1248, the first house of the order in England, and — unusually — they are back: the Irish Augustinians bought the place in 1953 and run it as a priory and retreat centre. The church, dedicated in 2013, was built into the shell of the medieval infirmary, and the remains of the friary church and cloisters stand about the lawns running down to the Stour. Grounds and church are open through the day at no charge, with a daily Mass. Clare Castle is a few minutes’ walk away.
