Clare packs a lot into a short walk. A Norman castle mound rises from what’s now a country park, and beside the Stour stands Clare Priory — founded in 1248 as the first house of Augustinian friars in England. A Saxon earthwork survives nearby too. The streets between them are lined with timber-framed and pargeted houses. Cavendish lies just to the east.
