Melford Hall stands behind the green at Long Melford, a turreted Tudor mansion granted to William Cordell after the monasteries fell and lived in by the Hyde Parker family ever since. Beatrix Potter was a cousin and regular visitor — the Jemima Puddle-duck toy she gave the family is still here. There’s a walled garden, a banqueting house and old specimen trees. National Trust; paid entry. Kentwell Hall is just up the road.
