Pink-washed thatched cottages line the green at Cavendish, with the flint tower of St Mary’s behind them. The Old Rectory here became the first base of the Sue Ryder Foundation, set up in 1953; Sue Ryder and her husband Leonard Cheshire are buried in the churchyard. Clare and Long Melford are both a short drive up the Stour valley.
