The old town of Harwich sits at the mouth of the Stour and Orwell, a working port since the Middle Ages. On the green stands a rare timber treadwheel crane, once worked by men walking inside its two great wheels, and near the seafront the circular Redoubt Fort, built in 1808 against a Napoleonic invasion that never came. Harwich Town station is right in the old town.
