Operational radar was born here. In September 1937 Bawdsey Manor became the world’s first working radar station, and the coast’s chain of tall masts went up in time to give warning through the Battle of Britain. The wartime transmitter block is now a museum telling that story, on the cliff above the mouth of the Deben. Paid entry, open on set days — check ahead before making the trip.
