Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.
In 1667 a Dutch force landed near here and was driven back by the garrison — the last opposed seaborne invasion of England, and the first land battle of the Royal Marines. The brick fort you walk today is largely 18th-century, guarding the mouth of the Orwell at Felixstowe. English Heritage looks after it, and for an entry fee you can explore the ramparts and gun rooms. Below on the shingle point is a nature reserve, good for migrant birds and sea watching.
