River Wharfe is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in North Yorkshire, covering 0.25 km². It is one of 230 SSSIs in the county. The surrounding countryside is part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Upper Wharfedale and Kettlewell Meadows are among the SSSIs within 0.8 km. The nearest railway station is Horton-in-Ribblesdale, about 14.1 km to the west.
