A cheerful Wharfedale village with three pubs and a scatter of stone cottages, Kettlewell fills up in August for its scarecrow festival, when figures in fancy dress pop up all over the place. It played the fictional Knapely in the 2003 film Calendar Girls. Good walks climb straight out of the village — over the tops to Arncliffe in Littondale, or up the dale to Starbotton and Buckden.
