The last village up Wharfedale before the road climbs over into Wensleydale, Buckden makes a natural walkers’ base — its name means ‘deer valley’, a nod to the medieval hunting forest that once covered these fells. Buckden Pike rises steeply behind, and paths lead off in every direction. The Buck Inn sits on the green. Hubberholme is a mile downstream and Starbotton the next village down the dale.
