Ashton Court is Bristol’s biggest park, 850 acres of Repton-landscaped woods and grassland just across the Avon from the city, with a deer herd that’s grazed the estate for centuries. The Grade I mansion is run by a separate trust and only opens occasionally, but the grounds are free to explore every day, with waymarked trails, two golf courses and a mountain-bike track. It’s also home to the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta each summer. Leigh Woods and the Avon Gorge are close by to the north-east.
