Places to explore in SomersetEngland · South West England

Somerset is a county of wetland and high ground. Flat moors and drainage rhynes fill the centre, where Glastonbury Tor rises like an island above the old marsh, once the Isle of Avalon. Around the rim stand the limestone Mendip Hills, split by the caves and cliffs of Cheddar Gorge, and to the west the moorland of Exmoor runs out to a high sea cliff. History runs deep, from the Roman spa at the Roman Baths in Bath to the medieval glory of Wells Cathedral and the ruined abbey at Glastonbury.
