Open accessNational Trust land — free to wander
The “Thunder and Lightning Man” Andrew Crosse ran electrical experiments here in the early 1800s, stringing wires through the trees to catch the charge in the air. His Georgian mansion burnt down in 1894, leaving little but the music room, and the grounds are now a National Trust reserve of ponds, a walled garden and woodland walks deep in the Quantock Hills. Free to visit; Bishop’s Lydeard station is about 7km southwest.
