Montacute’s streets are built from the same golden Ham stone as the great Elizabethan house at its edge, all quarried from the conical St Michael’s Hill above. A folly tower crowns the hill, reached by a spiral path through the trees, with wide views over south Somerset. East Coker lies a few miles to the east.
