Montacute is an Elizabethan showpiece in honey-coloured Ham stone, built around 1598 for Sir Edward Phelips, a lawyer who later helped prosecute Guy Fawkes. Its Long Gallery, at 172 feet the longest surviving in England, now hangs Tudor and Jacobean portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. The formal gardens keep their balustraded terraces and clipped yews. National Trust; paid entry. Yeovil Pen Mill station is about 7km east.
