Barwick Park is a private estate south-east of Yeovil, but public footpaths criss-cross it, giving views of its four eccentric follies: the Fish Tower, the Rose Tower, an obelisk called The Needle, and strangest of all, Jack the Treacle Eater, an archway topped with a tower and a golden statue of Mercury. They went up in the 1770s, probably commissioned by the estate’s then-owner John Newman, and were once named among Britain’s top ten follies on Countryfile. No entrance, no ticket — just follow the footpaths.
