Founded by St Aldhelm in 705 and a Saxon cathedral long before it was a Benedictine abbey, Sherborne has been the town’s parish church since the Dissolution — open daily, no charge. Two castles sit within a mile: Sherborne Old Castle, which Cromwell knocked about, and Sherborne Castle, which Walter Raleigh built instead of repairing it.
