Sherborne is built of mellow ochre stone around its abbey, whose nave carries the earliest large-scale fan vaulting in England, spread across the ceiling like stone lace. The town has two castles: the ruined 12th-century Old Castle, wrecked in the Civil War, and the newer Sherborne Castle that Walter Raleigh began building in 1594. Trains stop in the town centre.
