Thomas Hardy renamed Evershot ‘Evershead’ and had Tess breakfast at its inn, the Acorn, on her long walk to meet Angel Clare’s parents. It’s a small stone village high in the West Dorset hills — the second highest in the county — where the River Frome rises from a spring near the church. Chetnole station is about 4km to the north-east.
