R.D. Blackmore’s grandfather was rector here, and Oare’s little church is where he set the wedding-day shooting of Lorna Doone — Carver Doone firing through a window as she stands at the altar. The hamlet lies deep in an Exmoor valley, remote and hard to reach by anything but car. Open to look round.
