Burrow Mump is a steep green hillock rising on its own out of the flat Somerset Levels, with a roofless church on top. A ‘mump’ is just a local word for a small hill, and this one was once a motte — the earth mound of an early castle — before a chapel was built on the summit. The ruin you see now is an unfinished church of St Michael, left half-built in the 1700s. The National Trust owns the hill, which is also a war memorial, and it is a short scramble to the top for a wide view across the wetlands and the River Parrett Trail winding below. The Battle of Sedgemoor was fought a few miles north in 1685.
