Beside Wells Cathedral, this medieval palace of the bishops of Bath and Wells sits inside its own moat, crossed by a drawbridge and gatehouse where the resident mute swans still ring a bell for food, a trick taught in the 1870s. The fourteen acres of RHS-partner gardens take in the springs, or wells, that gave the city its name. Paid entry; Castle Cary station is about 14km southeast.
