On Priddy’s green stands a thatched stack of old wooden hurdles, the pens for a sheep fair that moved here from Wells in 1348, during the Black Death. The fair hasn’t been held since 2013, but villagers rebuilt the stack that year after an arson attack. Priddy lies in a hollow near the top of the Mendip Hills, 260 metres up. North-east of the village are the Priddy Circles, four earthwork rings in a line, probably Neolithic, and the Bronze Age burial mounds of Priddy Nine Barrows. The entrance to Swildon’s Hole, the longest cave on Mendip, is in the middle of the village; it’s strictly for experienced cavers. The creeper-covered Queen Victoria Inn has been a pub since 1851.
