England’s smallest city, Wells is really a medieval huddle around its cathedral, with the moated Bishop’s Palace and the cobbled Vicars’ Close — said to be Europe’s oldest purely residential street — just behind. Wells Cathedral and its scissor arches are the draw. Castle Cary station, about 15km to the south-east, is the nearest railway.
