Somerset show caves on the River Axe, home to the stalagmite that legend calls the petrified Witch of Wookey

The River Axe rises inside Wookey Hole and flows out through a series of large limestone chambers on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills. The caves are run as a show attraction, lit and laid out with walkways, and the route takes you past the underground river and the tall stalagmite known as the Witch of Wookey — a figure local legend calls a witch turned to stone. Divers have pushed far into the flooded passages beyond the show section, some of the earliest cave-diving ground explored in Britain. The site is a protected wildlife site (an SSSI). The cathedral city of Wells is a few miles to the south-east, and quieter Ebbor Gorge is right next door for a walk.
