Cheddar sits at the mouth of its gorge and gives its name to the cheese first recorded here back in medieval times. Beyond the shops and tearooms the road climbs into Cheddar Gorge, with show caves in the cliffs below. It gets busy in season; come early or out of summer for the quieter walks along the top.
