The ‘Rock of Ages’, a deep cleft in the crags of Burrington Combe, is said to have sheltered the Reverend Augustus Toplady in a storm and prompted his hymn of that name. Whatever the truth of the tale, the combe is a fine limestone valley on the northern Mendips, its road threading between tumbled grey cliffs. Open access, and popular with climbers and walkers heading up onto the hills.
