The roofless tower on top is all that remains of St Michael’s church; an earlier church on the site was thrown down by an earthquake in 1275. The steep conical hill rises straight out of the flat Somerset Levels and is visible for miles, long tangled up with the myth of Avalon and still walked as a place of pilgrimage. National Trust land, free and always open — a stiff climb up on foot. Castle Cary station is about 13km east.
