William Gibbs made a fortune importing Peruvian guano for fertiliser, and in the 1860s had the architect John Norton remodel his house near Wraxall into this High Victorian Gothic pile, chapel and great conservatory included. The National Trust bought it in 2002 after a public appeal, saving the contents intact. Formal gardens, a walled kitchen garden and parkland surround it. Paid entry; Nailsea & Backwell station is about 3km southwest.
