Goldney Hall’s garden, tucked into the slope above Bristol’s Clifton, hides one of the finest 18th-century grottoes in the country — a chamber lined with shells, coral and “Bristol diamond” quartz, built for the Quaker merchant Goldney family. The grounds also run to a canal, an orangery and a rotunda with views over the Avon Gorge. It’s now part of the University of Bristol and mostly closed to outsiders, though the university runs occasional public tours through the year — worth checking its gardens page before planning a visit.
