Arnos Vale is a 45-acre Victorian garden cemetery on a wooded hillside above Bristol, opened in 1839 and now cared for by a heritage charity after years of restoration. Grand chapels and monuments sit among mature trees and wildflower meadows, and it’s as much a nature reserve today as a burial ground. Free to walk around at any reasonable hour, with a café at the Spielman Centre and a shop at the East Lodge. Partial remains of Bristol Castle are a couple of kilometres north-west.
