Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.

A 160-foot triangular folly of red brick, King Alfred’s Tower was finished in 1772 for Henry Hoare of Stourhead, near the spot where Alfred is said to have rallied his men before the Battle of Edington in 878. A spiral stair of over 200 steps climbs to a viewing platform high above the Somerset–Wiltshire border. The National Trust opens it on selected days. Bruton, some 4km off, has the nearest railway station.
