Henry Hoare II dammed the River Stour in the 1740s to make the lake at the heart of Stourhead, then ringed it with classical set pieces — a domed Pantheon of the 1750s, a Temple of Apollo, grottoes — reached on a circuit walk that turns up a new view at every bend. He gave it to the National Trust in 1946. Paid entry near Mere, with the wider estate beyond the garden.
