Places to explore in WiltshireEngland · South West England

Wiltshire is chalk country, a great dome of downland cut by clear rivers and crowned with more prehistory than anywhere else in Britain. Stonehenge stands on the open sweep of Salisbury Plain, while to the north the henge and stone avenues of Avebury enclose a whole village beside the mysterious mound of Silbury Hill. Later ages left the abandoned hill town of Old Sarum and grand estates such as Longleat and the landscaped lakes of Stourhead. Chalk-cut white horses gallop across the scarps.
