Timeless National Trust village and film set.
Open accessNational Trust land — free to wander
William Henry Fox Talbot made the first photographic negative here in 1835, an image of a latticed window at Lacock Abbey; a barn by the gates now holds a museum to him. The village of timber and stone cottages passed to the National Trust in 1944 and has been kept free of aerials and wires ever since, which is why film crews love it, from Cranford to Harry Potter. The Sign of the Angel is a fifteenth-century inn on Church Street. Melksham station is about 4km south.
