William Henry Fox Talbot made what is now the world’s oldest surviving photographic negative here in 1835 — a postage-stamp image of an oriel window in the abbey’s south gallery, which you can still find inside. The medieval abbey became a country house after the Dissolution, with cloisters surviving below. National Trust, in the much-filmed village of Lacock; paid entry, and a Fox Talbot museum sits by the gate.
