A moated manor of the 1470s, built for the lawyer Thomas Tropnell, with a gabled front watched over by carved stone soldiers and a monkey. Alfred Parsons laid out the Arts and Crafts garden around it from 1907 — topiary houses, terraces, a lily pond and a gazebo above the fishpond. National Trust, near Melksham; opening days are limited and the house is often shown by guided tour, so check before setting out.
