On the edge of Bradford-on-Avon, Belcombe Court’s Georgian garden was laid out in the Picturesque style with a grotto, a rotunda and a ruined temple, built in the same years as the more famous one at Stourhead. John Wood the Elder, the architect behind Bath’s Royal Crescent, extended the house itself in 1734. It’s a private estate and stays closed most of the year, but the garden does open on occasional charity and garden-trust open days — worth watching for locally. Bradford-on-Avon is a short walk away, and Iford Manor’s garden, laid out in a similar spirit, is a couple of miles south-west.
