Steep lanes of weavers’ cottages climb above the Avon at Bradford-on-Avon, an old cloth town on the Cotswold edge. The small Saxon church of St Laurence, rediscovered in 1871, is around a thousand years old, and a great tithe barn of 1341 stands downstream at Barton Farm. On the town bridge sits a 17th-century lock-up, once a chapel, known locally as the blind house. The station is in the middle of town.
