Harold Peto lived at Iford Manor from 1899 to 1933 and turned the steep hillside above the Frome into an Italian garden — terraces, columns, statuary and cypresses, with a colonnaded cloister he built to hold his collection of carved fragments. Reached down a lane near Bradford on Avon, with Avoncliff station barely a mile off. Paid entry on set days, and summer opera in the cloister.
